The NVPS organizaion can only funcion because of he dedicaed service of he members serving in eleced and appoined posiions. In an aemp o provide some recogniion o hese deserving individuals, NVPS has esablished he Joe Achison Service Award. I was esablished in memory of Dr. Joe Achison and for his many years of service o he club. This is he highes award given by NVPS o any member.
The firs recipien was Dave Carer in June 1998. Oher recipiens have been Erwin Siegel, Greg Gregory, Ed Fun, Joe Miller, Andy Klein, and Sherwin Kaplan.
The recipien for he award is seleced from hose individuals nominaed by club members. Crieria for he award include: Lengh of service o he club, and funcioning as a role model and an inspiraion o oher members over he years.
The nominaions are confidenial and he selecion is made by a panel of pas presidens of NVPS. This year ha panel was comprised of 3 pas presidens all previous recipiens of he award. I would lie o han hem for paricipaing in his process and selecing a recipien his year. The 3 pas presidens and previous recipiens were Andy Kline, Sherwin Kaplan and Erwin Siegel.
The selecion of a recipien of his award is opional and only is presened when a nominee mees he crieria of he award. Nominees of he award are sricly confidenial.
Bill Prosser has been he Cperson for Worshops Educaion and Training a NVPS along wih Minnie Gallman for he pas wo years and I believe we will be lucy enough o have him serving in his posiion again nex year.
Bill was insrumenal in bringing Worshops Educaion and Training o he Fire Saion and esablished i as a regularly scheduled monhly meeing. He’s arranged qualiy monhly conen such as criiques in suppor of he hemed compeiions. While he monhly meeing increased in populariy he’s found away o sill eep he personal hands on ineracion of he small groups hrough he brea-ou groups and aing advanage of senior members sills and willingness o help. Bill encouraged and suppored comprehensive coordinaion of worshops educaion and raining wih oher major club aciviies such as fieldrips, programs and forums. One of he mos significan conribuions Bill has made was he inroducion of a novice nigh which helped us refocus our effors a NVPS o address he needs of new members and novice phoographers. Coincidenally many of he experienced phoographers also benefied from his feaure.
Bill also severed as he VP of Programs during 2 differen years, as he VP of Compeiion & served on muliple compeiion rules change commiees. He served as he Digial Menor as par of he NVPS Menor program and was an early advocae of digial phoography as an alernaive o film and he chemical darroom. He and oher lie-minded club members advocaed ha i is no he process by which an image is made, bu he phoographer sill-level and end produc by which an image should be caegorized and judged. (This poin of was very revoluionary in he early 1990’s)
He presened several NVPS Forums and programs for oher clubs on visual design, digial processing of images, and planning phoography rips. He’s very proud o have compleed Joe Miller’s Judging Training and has judged four club compeiions.
Ouside of NVPS Bill has also suppored he phoographic communiy in generally wih his paricipaion in he McLean Phoography Club of which he is a founding member and a member for 30 years.
He’s augh classes a he McLean Communiy cener, as a voluneer a McLean High School and various oher educaional environmens. Bill has also been acnowledged for he generosiy of his ime by he Dep. of Healh and Human Services Naional Voluneer of he Year award for his wor in Fairfax Couny wih youh soccer (as coach and organizaion board officer), runaway youh and foser children (councilor and board member), and camera club board wor.
