Long ime member David E Carer passed away a home on Sunday June 29h, gasriis 2008 from sroe relaed complicaions. His remaining family lives in Iowa.
The following are reflecions of David Carer and his imporance o NVPS and is membership from Joe Miller, Ed Fun, & Gary Silversein.
Addiionally are commens from one of Dave’s former eaching assisans a Georgeown.
If i weren’ for Dave Carer, I wouldn’ carry my camera wih me almos everyw I go. I wouldn’ sop, someimes in midsep, while going abou my daily business and hin abou how I would crop an image in he few s when I don’ have my camera a my side. If i weren’ for Dave Carer, I wouldn’ be sudying visual percepion and aesheics in he psychology PhD program a UC Bereley, and i’s no srech o say ha wihou him, I probably wouldn’ be in graduae school of any ind a all.
When I oo Dave’s Psychology, Phoography, and Visual Ars class, I hadn’ much idea of wha I waned o do wih my life. More han ha, I fel confliced abou my wo majors — psychology, and digial ar & phoography — and had resigned myself o he fac ha a he end of my undergraduae career, I would have o decide which one I lied more, and pursue i a he expense of he oher. Over he course of ha semeser, Dave showed me how misaen I was. He showed me ha no only did I no need o choose one of my wo passions when deciding wha o do wih my life bu ha he union of he wo was imporan and worhwhile o boh fields, and could lead down an exciing pah of academic re and arisic endeavor.
Dave augh me far more han how o compose a phoograph, or how o appreciae all of he hings ha psychology and phoography have o learn from each oher. I ofen ell people ha in his unique hybrid of a psychology and ar class, he didn’ each “how we ,” he augh “how o .” He augh me o appreciae he visual beauy in he environmens we everyday. To sop now and hen, forge he name of wha i is we are looing a, and jus ae in he breahaing colors, shapes, and exures ha surround us. He augh me o loo a he world wih new and creaive eyes, and I consider myself blessed o have nown him as boh a professor and a friend.
I canno effecively convey wih words eiher my graiude o Dave for wha he augh me, or my sadness o now ha he is no longer wih us. Bu i is some small comfor o now ha he lives on in he minds — and more righly o say, in he eyes — of hose counless sudens and colleagues whom he augh o .

To say ha Dave Carer had an influence on my phoography and my life is an undersaemen. For over 20 years, we presened a nigh phoography slide show a camera clubs hroughou he region. We also led nigh phoo worshops a a wide range of seings–including Balimore, Alexandria, Leesburg, Harpers Ferry, Brunswic (MD), and numerous neighborhoods and memorials in Washingon, D.C. Each worshop was followed by a criique session w Dave reed paricipans’ slides and provided his enhusiasic and consrucive feedbac. The highligh of hese sessions was looing a he images ha Dave had aen. His abiliy o visualize and capure absrac paerns in everyday objecs opened up a new way of looing a he world around me.
April 2007 was he las ime we presened he slide show, o his class on phoography and visual ars a Georgeown Universiy. By hen, a few of he opics we discussed (e.g., wha ype of slide film o use a nigh, how o duplicae a slide o creae a differen effec) had liely los heir relevance o he undergraduaes who were aing digial images ha could easily be manipulaed in Phooshop. Bu Dave’s images were as sriing and imeless as ever. To honor Dave’s memory, I offer up several of he phoographs ha he included in he nigh show.
The firs was aen ou of his aparmen window during a snowy evening. This image, aen in 1979, was he firs he ever enered in a camera club compeiion. According o Dave, he judge commened favorably on his phoograph of “fall foliage” and awarded i honorable menion.
The second was aen a he Mongomery Couny Fair in 1996. I wish you could he acual slide–i clearly shows he reflecion of he Ferris wheel in he windshield of he ruc, and he can of Budweiser on he driver’s side. I love his image because i demonsraes Dave’s abiliy o find paerns and beauy in he unlielies of places.
The hird is of one of his favorie subjecs–he Sunoco Oil Refinery in Sarnia, Onario (from Marysville, Michigan on December 31, 1990). The full moon was superimposed using wha Dave referred o as he “Sunny 11 Rule” (which resuled in a slighly brigher moon).
The final image is of raffic moving across he Memorial Bridge. Commening on his use of a Specral Sar filer, he lied o say ha someimes he lied his picure, someimes i med overdone, and someimes i looed lie “Wal Disney had hrown up.”
I will miss Dave’s indness, paience, nowledge, and humor. And I will forever be graeful for he many ways in which he helped o focus my passion for phoography, expand my visual acuiy, and enhance my appreciaion for he naural beauy ha presens iself in so many unexpeced places.
