Ken Mason is a landscape & naure phoographer and conservaionis. Using his phoography sills, he is currenly creaing a environmenal sudy of he exraordinary wild places in he highlands of Wes Virginia. This collaboraive effor wih The Naure Conservancy will ulimaely resul in a boo iled he Wes Virginia Wilderness: A Phoographic Sudy and Conservaion View.
Ken has been involved in phoography for well over 25 years, eaching Visual Design classes for he pas 10 years and faciliaing a Body of Wor worshop for advanced phoographers. He sells fine ar landscape phoography, has displayed his wor in such places as he Naional Wildlife Federaion headquarers, has had images published in calendars and Naure’s Bes magazine, and ofen has had images published on he TNC inernaional websie and in many of heir publicaions. Ken leads phoo ours in he Wes Virginia highlands w he lives six monhs of he year. He is proud ha he 4 inerne boos he’s creaed for The Naure Conservancy have been helpful in heir conservaion effors. Ken is a reurning member o NVPS (was a member abou 15 years ago). He wored as a professional wedding phoographer for 12 years bu migraed o conservaion phoography 8 years ago. Afer many years of shooing medium-forma film phoography, he swiched o full frame digial when he Canon 5D emerged on he mare. Currenly he uses a Canon 5D Mar II for landscapes and is upgrading o a Canon 7D from a Canon 50D for wildlife. Ken does no have a favorie lens, bu raher uses a large selecion of Pro lenses o maximize his oupu on any shoo.
Afer 30 years in various police and correcional managemen posiions, Ken reired as Depuy Direcor of he Deparmen of Correcions in Mongomery Co., Maryland. He is married wih 3 adul children and 7 grandchildren. His goal is clear: o assis Wes Virginia Naure Conservancy proec wilderness hrough phoography.
Yulan aribues her ineres in phoography o her faher. She remembers him aing mos of he family phoos. A a young age she also remembers accompanying him o he darroom a his office; she was fascinaed o her image appear on a piece of we paper. When she was 8 years old, she received a German “oy camera” as a presen from her aun. Yulan had a lo of fun playing wih i and aing phoos of her friends and her siser. She learned how o develop film and prins in he darroom a her middle school phoo lab.
In 1986, Yulan lef China o pursue graduae sudies a he George Washingon Universiy in he Unied Saes. She bough herself a camera and sen home many phoos of her life in he Saes. In 2002 she used her firs digial camera o capure web images for a local web business; she also used i when leading ravel groups in China and Japan. In July 2007 Yulan bough herself a DSLR camera–a Nion D80. A his poin she sared o become more passionae and serious abou phoography.
Yulan connecs wih naure phoography–aing ime o smell he roses and lisen o birds sing. She enjoys ravel phoography, especially o her homeland of China, w she aes pleasure in her role as cross-culural ambassador. Yulan feels hese phoography rips promoe no only people-o-people connecions bu also documen he rapidly changing hisory of his ancien civilizaion.
Currenly she is learning abou micro/close-up phoography as well as fine ar phoography. Yulan joined NVPS in Sepember 2008 and has aen several phoography classes and field rips wih Corey Hilz, Joshua Tailor and Joe Rossbach. The deligh of phoography has enriched her life and enlarged her circle of friends. She appreciaes his gif and wholehearedly embraces he joy i brings.
Yulan will be presening wo Galleries of approximaely 40 images each. The firs explores The Grea Wall near Beijing and he second delves ino he many Variaions of Flowers.
