Roger has been a member of NVPS since February 2009 and enjoys boh he educaional and camaraderie aspecs of he club. He is humbled by he many exremely silled phoographers he has me in he club and aspires o be as good as hey are, alhough he may no live ha long!
A naive of Briish Columbia, Canada, Roger’s early phoographic experience was very much influenced by his grandfaher who was a phoo journalis for a small own newspaper and oo counless phoos of Roger as a young boy. Roger’s firs camera was a gif from his grandfaher; an old Koda box camera. As a young adul he was given a Penax 35 mm model, and relished ime in he darroom of his neighbor, alhough he resuls of his wor were less han sellar. The raising of 2 ids limied his phoography o he ypical shos a proud paren aes a concers, soccer games, and rips o amusemen pars.
Lae in his career as an associaion execuive, he purchased a Sony Mavica camera wih a 0.3meg sensor, w images were sho and sored on 3 inch diss (you could ge 10 images on a dis). The firs aemps a digial phoography really grabbed his aenion, especially wih he realizaion ha you could ae as many phoos as you waned o, and i didn’ cos you a cen o ge hem developed! In fac, he bigges obsacle he had o overcome in his iniial aemps a digial was he hesiaion in aing a lo of phoos… a hrowbac o predigial days when you had o mae absoluely sure you go he perfec sho…afer all, he cos of film and he cos of processing was prey high!
Now hooed on digial, he hen purchased a Canon Powershoo 3meg poin and shoo camera, hen a 5meg Canon poin and shoo…and finding he was really hooed, swiched eams o Nion and bough a D70, his firs DSLR camera. Tha camera is now used by his daugher and her family, and he now shoos wih a Nion D300. He loves his 18-200 Nior lens, bu you can also find in his i a 50mm 1.8, a 70-200 2.8, and a Sigma 10-20. Recenly he purchased a 28-85 Nior lens for $25 a a yard sale and ran away as fas as he could before he seller realized ha he had jus given i away!
Roger considers himself an eclecic phoographer, elling people ha he shoos whaever sries his ineres a he ime…alhough he admis ha a well-shaped ree or a scenic landscape during a sunrise will grab his aenion every ime. Reiremen in 2008 has brough him he ime o pursue he hobby he loves. He ries o ge ou on shoos a leas once a wee, and if he doesn’ , his family maes plans for an inervenion. His plans in he near fuure include Twin Falls Sae Par in Wes Virginia and he annual family summer re o Surfside Beach SC wih a side rip o Huningon Beach Sae Par jus down he road from he beach.
During his ime in he club he has enjoyed he compeiions immensely and was honored o be Novice Monochrome Phoographer of he Year las year, while one of his phoos won Novice Color Prin of he Year and anoher won Honorable Menion in he Bes of Year Enhanced Phoo caegory. He has also had phoos juried ino he Naure Vision Expo and he new Meadowlar Phoo Exhibiion, which is par of he Foo DC cones.

Dan Ward uses phoography in an effor o capure images ha ouch people by capuring decisive momens of inense emoions such as love, joy, sorrow and conemplaion. He began his phoography career as he head phoographer for his high school newspaper over 40 years ago and honed his visual sill while raveling he world as a rumpe player in he US Navy jazz band, he Ambassadors and he US Navy Roc Band, Fly in he Soup. He polished his sills in phoography classes a he Universiy of Norh Texas and has coninued developing his eye while woring as a human capial execuive and people sraegy consulan. Afer moving o norhern Virginia in 2003, he became acive in he Loudoun Phoo Club and shifed his membership o NVPS in 2010.
Dan sho medium forma and 35mm unil he began he migraion o digial in 2001. His firs love is sree phoography, alhough he also has a passion for naure phoography. He is a confirmed Nionoholic and currenly uses a D7000 as his primary camera, alhough he occasionally uses a Holga “o eep from becoming oo dependen on echnology.”
Dan has received awards in a variey of phoography shows including he Ellipse Gallery’s “Bes Phoos of he Las 75 Years,” Claude Moore Naure Phoo Expos, Naure’s Vision 2010, several Meadowlar Naure Phoo Expos (Koda Sponsor’s Choice award 2006), On Your Own Time ar shows in Dallas (People’s Choice Awards in 2004 and 2006) and various communiy ar shows in Virginia, Texas, Connecicu and Arizona. His asrophoos have been published in Sy & Telescope and Asronomy magazines as well as David Levy’s besseller, The Sy.
For he pas four years, he has been involved in “phoery” – a process of combining phoos wih poery in a way ha inegraes he wo mediums so ha he end resul is greaer han he sum of he pars, and no jus simply an annoaed phoo or illusraed poem. He is he co-auhor of wo phoery collecions published by Blurb boos, Emerge and Plane of Life. The Arium Gallery in McLean feaured a show of his mos recen phoery collaboraion in he fall of 2010.
