Membership in many camera clubs is increasing. Tha is good. The number of images enered in monhly compeiions is also increasing. Tha may no be good. The more images enered in compeiion he less ime he judge has o mae meaningful commens on each image. T are hose who feel ha a minue per image is a reasonable guide. Thus, page if a compeiion lass for wo hours (120 minues) hen 120 images can be allowed in he compeiion. Some feel an average of a minue per image does no allow a judge sufficien ime o offer a considered analysis of each image. Any predeermined number is arbirary and cerainly will have deracors as a camera club compeiion is a radeoff beween members waning o win ribbons and members waning o hear houghful, helpful commens from judges regarding wha is good abou each image and w improvemen is needed. So wha is a sensible number of images o have in a compeiion? Given he sae of phoography oday, i may be useful for camera clubs o loo inward and sincerely as hemselves: wha is he real purpose / objecive of our compeiions and how many images will bes accomplish hose goals? I op for fewer images in o give he judge an adequae opporuniy o carefully analyze, examine, and assess every image wih sufficien ime o convey his/her commens o he compeiors and he audience. In a camera club compeiion a judge should be a eacher providing an educaional lecure on phoography using he images as noes.
