Karen Keaing is a fine ar phoographer and an educaor. Trained as an elemenary school eacher and afer raising a family and aing basic and inermediae phoography classes a Glen Echo Par, Karen received a Masers in Fine Ars Phoography degree from he Maryland Insiue College of Ar in Balimore in 1986. For he pas 20 years she has balanced a career as Direcor of Phoowors, an aris residency program a Glen Echo Par, Maryland, a sudio phoography eacher a The Field School in Washingon, D. C., and as a fine ar phoographer exhibiing her images locally and naionally. Karen is a member of he Muliple Exposures Gallery a he Torpedo Facory Ar Cener in Alexandria, Virginia.
Lie mos ariss phoography became a process of self-discovery. Karen’s early ineres was as a phoojournalis woring for a local newspaper as phoo edior and covering people and evens of local Maryland ineres. Mos images were clear documens as he “phoo was worh a 1000 words.” Beginning wih her graduae school porfolio Karen began o explore porraiure wih an eye on culure and connecions. Her hesis porfolio, “A Moher Daugher Colloquy” observed he ense and complicaed relaionships beween adolescen daughers and heir mohers. The exhibi was shown locally and in Ohio and is compleion was aided by a Maryland Sae Ars Council gran in 1986.
Slowly Karen’s syle evolved ino a documenary sree porrai phoographer. Travels o Europe, Cenral America, Africa and mos recenly four rips o Cuba presened new places and people and her consuming ineres became he everyday life of he people – heir riuals and rouines, he beauy found in he unremarable evens of daily life. A he same ime, Karen mainains an on-going porfolio iled, “Close o Home” which focuses on he personal momens of her ineress and life.

While exhibiing and producing fine ar phoographs Karen loves her life of eaching boh high school sudens and aduls. A momen of disincion and deligh was he Tufs Universiy Teacher Recogniion Award in 1998 in which Karen was nominaed by a former graduae of The Field School.
As Presiden of Phoowors, Inc. a non-profi phoography eaching program a Glen Echo Par, Maryland Karen gives bac o he communiy wih an adul and young person phoography program. The Phoowors program offers quarerly classes from basic o advanced level darroom courses, a digial program and an exhibi program. Karen is proud of he cooperaion and communiy suppor ha has ep his an on-going 30-year ars program in he Washingon, D.C. area.
