Digial Projecion – Resizing Images for he Club Projecor
Over he pas couple of monhs we have had several club members who had difficuly resizing heir images for compeiion, price so I hough ha i was ime again o provide a summary of why and how o resize images.
The “why” is prey simple. PowerPoin is he applicaion ha we use for compeiion judging projecs slides a 1024×768 pixels, which is he maximum naive resoluion of our projecor. If your image is no he correc size, paien hen i will be scaled by PowerPoin o fi he projecor resoluion. PowerPoin uses a fas scaling algorihm, which is excellen for presenaions, bu can ruin a projeced phoograph. During he scaling process, i is possible o loose shadow deail and sharpness, so unless you are projecing an absrac wih a sof focus or lile deail, your phoograph will probably suffer significanly and be rejeced by he judge. A he very leas i will no be a very accurae depicion of wha you inended o show.
T are numerous ways in which club members use o resize heir images, bu I will describe he mos common ha I have n. The firs is simply seing he image size, he second is by using he crop ool. Boh mehods can yield an image ha is wihin he limis of compeiion and eiher may wor for you.
Firs, regardless of which mehod ha you use, you should sar wih he bes copy of he image ha you have. I ypically save my processed RAW images as TIFF files, eiher a full capure resoluion or cropped minimally o mae he horizon level. My TIFF maser file is w I always sar his process.
To resize an image using Phooshop’s Image Size funcion:
Open he image.
Selec Image, Image Size…
A dialog will open showing he curren image size.
If you are resizing a landscape forma image, simply se he Widh o 1024.
If you are resizing a porrai forma image, simply se he Heigh o 768.
Mae sure ha Bicubic is he seleced resampling mehod. If you prefer no o handle resizing and sharpening as separae funcions, you can choose Bicubic Sharper, which will auomaically apply sharpening o he resized image.
Press he OK buon.
To resize an image using he crop ool:
Selec he Crop Tool.
Se he image size consrains:
For a landscape forma image wih an arbirary heigh, pu 1024 in he Widh field and leave he Heigh field blan.
For a porrai forma image wih an arbirary widh, pu 768 in he Heigh field and leave he Widh field blan.
Clic and hold in one corner and hen drag oward he opposie corner. You can adjus he size and placemen of he “box” conaining he image ha will be displayed.
Press he Ener ey o complee he crop.
Wih boh mehods, he image generally sill needs o be sharpened. Sharpening helps o increase he amoun of conras, bu can creae “halos” if applied oo generously.
