Jim Sollo has been a member of NVPS since 1982. While he no longer aends many of he organizaions’ meeings, he always come o he annual NVPS Banque and is coninually impressed wih he qualiy and creaiviy of he he images made by he NVPS members. During he period ha he compeed in NVPS phoo compeiions he has won numerous awards for his images including Phoographer of he Year and Slide of he Year. A complee failure in Blac and Whie phoography (he never could mae a saisfacory prin), and a near Luddie when i comes o maing digial images, he coninues o wor exclusively in color slides. In spie of hese deficiencies in his sills and abiliies, he lie o hin ha he brings he same crieria o judging all images. And having aen housands of really awful images himself, he feels well-qualified o discuss – a lengh – jus abou every misae an aspiring phoographer can mae.
Jim believes ha phoography is an ar form, and as such i is no a compeiive enerprise. Noneheless, in he spiri ha Dave Carer, Joe Miller, Jim Seele and he oher fine phoographers wihin NVPS who have provided phoographic criiques of members images, he believes ha we can all learn hings from each oher as we discuss images. He hopes ha his criique of images presened during he December compeiion will encourage all he presening phoographers and will be useful o hem in evaluaing and improving heir own images.
Jim admis o being drawn o images wih srong visual conen, dynamic use of color or onaliy, w some hough has been given o composiion. Arisically, he is parial oward images which capure or creae a sense of mood or sir emoions. He appreciaes imagery which shows us somehing familiar in a unique or unexpeced way and he graviaes oward images which provide an inerpreive or impressionisic of a subjec, raher han a documenary approach.
