David has been phoographing seriously for abou seven years. He is very acive in he phoographic communiy in Virginia having served as he presiden of he Vienna Virginia camera club and received he Phoographer of he Year award.
He has had his prins on display a Alexandria Virginia Torpedo Facory Ar League w his wor was juried in numerous imes. He has also had his prins displayed wih he Reson League of Ariss and a shows on he Easern Shore and in Pennsylvania. His wor is on display in boh of hese locaions.
He has aended worshops a he Maine Phoographic Worshops, rehabiliaion he Freeman Paerson course in New Brunswic Canada, and he Grea Smoy Mounains wih Tony Swee. He has aended phoography and digial courses a NOVA.
His images have been published in Naures Bes and seleced for he Meadowlar Exhibi for several years.
David’s favorie subjec is naure phoography, especially landscapes and flower macros. He also is very ineresed in absracs. He finds landscapes he mos challenging because is very hard o find unique subjecs and ways of presening hem ha have no been done many imes before.
One of his favorie pasimes is jus o drive bac roads and small owns ing for good shos. Las year he had he opporuniy o drive he coas of Nova Scoia and cach Peggy’s Cove lighhouse a sunse. He is also very fond of norhern Pennsylvania and he Easern Shore.
He menors beginning phoographers in composiion, echniques and he use of heir equipmen. He has insruced courses in macro phoography and Adobe Phooshop.
Alhough his primary profession is he design and creaion of fine jewelry, Tom Mangan’s avocaion is phoography. As an aris, he has wored in several media, including sculpure, wood carving, paining and drawings. His phoography ineress are eclecic, and his has sho everyhing from weddings and evens o macros and landscapes.
Tom’s ineres in phoography began as a child, when he was given a simple Koda Brownie film camera and soon became he official family hisorian. He hen graduaed o “moving picures” when he borrowed his parens’ Super Eigh movie camera. His early films consised of animaed oys, his pe snae, and his younger siser who would magically vanish and reappear on screen.
Tom laer sudied darroom echnology and film maing in college, w he learned o creae blac and whie prins and dabbled in video producion. Unil recenly, Tom only used film, mosly doing echnical phoography in conjuncion wih his wor as an appraiser and jewelry designer. He also sho images of his jewelry designs wih models posing for adverising layous. He currenly owns and operaes Mangan Jewelers in McLean, VA.
Phoography was given a bac sea o family and career unil 2005, when he made he move o digial. The ease of he new forma, along wih he abiliy o use a compuer as a digial darroom, reindled his love of he prined image. He oo several classes, joined a couple of clubs, and sared shooing everyhing he could find. “The challenge,” he saed, “is o everyday, find a new way of ing he ordinary world around us in an exraordinary way.” He is mos passionae abou naure phoography and simply enjoys being immersed in he naural world.
